By Ed Baylor: Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder was given the starting job this week due to Josh Freeman suffering a concussion in the Vikings last game against the New York Giants. As usual, Ponder played in his normal mediocre fashion in the Vikings 44-31 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday at the Mall of America Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Ponder completed 14 of 21 passes for 145 yards with 3 sacks. The good news is that he didn’t throw any picks in the game, but the bad news is he didn’t throw for many yards and he didn’t have any touchdowns. Ponder rushed for 38 yards on 5 carries.
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers played well with 2 touchdowns, 3 sacks on 24 of 29 passes attempts for 285 yards. He completed a whopping 82.8 percent of his throws.
The Packers led 24-17 at halftime, but in the 2nd half they really turned it up a notch in scoring 20 points to the Vikings 14. The Vikings were able to score two touchdowns late in the 4th quarter but they were garbage touchdowns with just 4:42 remaining in the game on the first score and then 1:24 left in the quarter.
Aaron Rodgers had help with a strong running game led by rookie Eddie Lacy, who rushed for 94 yards on 29 carries with 1 touchdown run of 1 yard. Packers running back James Starks rushed for 57 yards on 7 carries with 1 touchdown.
Vikings running back Adrian Peterson rushed for 60 yards on 13 carries with 1 touchdown. He seems to be a mere shadow of what he was last season in rushing for over 2,000 yards.
Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson caught 7 passes for 123 yards with 2 touchdowns. Jarrett Boykin caught 5 passes for 88 yards.
Vikings wide receiver Kyle Rudolph caught 4 passes for 51 yards. Other than him, there wasn’t much production from the Vikings receivers due to Ponder having a terrible passing game.
The Vikings need to dump Ponder and find out whether Freeman can still play or not. If not, they need to cut their losses and let that guy go too. It seems like the only quarterback they have on their team that can throw the football is backup Matt Cassel. He should be the one starting now, not Ponder.
