By Tim Nielson: In a huge upset in UFC 193, Holly Holm (10-0) totally annihilated UFC Women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey (12-1) tonight in sending her crashing to her first defeat of her MMA career in scoring a brilliant 2nd round knockout in Melbourne, Australia.
The match was supposed to have been a competitive one, but it turned out to be a huge mismatch with the taller 5’8″ southpaw Holm having too much size, punching power and boxing skills for the short 5’6″ round body Rousey, who was knocked out cold from a left kick to the head followed by two rights to the head after she hit the deck.
The fight was over quickly in the 2nd round, as Holm circled the round, tagging Rousey with lefts over and over again. Rousey didn’t have the boxing skills to land anything at all in the 2nd. She attempted an amateurish right hand that missed by a mile. Holm then circled around and connected with a left to the head that had Rousey out on her feet. Holm followed with a swift left hook to the head that put Rousey on her back on the canvas. Holm them plopped down beside Rousey and preceded to tag her two times with right hands to the jab before she was pulled off the unconscious Rousey. It was several moments before Rousey was revived. When they did wake her up, she tried frantically to get up but they held her down. She was obviously badly hurt and didn’t know where she was.
Rousey’s nose was bleeding from the shots she’d absorbed in the 1st round, and her chin was a bright red from the big shots she’d taken in both rounds.
As bad as Rousey was whipped tonight, I don’t think it would be a good idea for her to attempt to face Holm in a rematch because the skill level between them is just too dramatic. Holm is a former female boxing champion, and she’s been doing this for years. Rousey is just an Olympic judo person, who only knows how to flip her over-matched opposition on the mat and either put them in arm bar submission holds or pound on them. That wasn’t going to work tonight because each time Rousey tried to get near Holm, she was nailed with straight left hands to the head. Rousey was already in trouble in the 1st round from the big shots that Holm was nailing her with. By the time the 2nd round had started, Rousey looked in bad shape, like she was already punch drunk from having eaten too many lefts to the head.
