By Ed Baylor: The Washington Redskins (2-5) went into the 4th quarter with a 21-14 lead against the Denver Broncos (7-1) but then completely fell apart in giving up 31 consecutive points to the Broncos to lose 45-21 at the Sports Authority Field in Denver, Colorado. In something more important than just the game, Redskins quarterback RG3 suffered a left knee injury in the 4th quarter when he was sacked by one of the Broncos defensive lineman. RG3 left the game and was replaced by backup Kirk Cousins.
It was determined that RG3 was okay but he remained on the sidelines for the remainder of the game. For his part, Cousins had two passes intercepted, one of which was returned for a 75 yard touchdown by Broncos defensive back Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie with 2:07 in the game to make it 45-21 for the Broncos.
Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, playing on two injured ankles, struggled during the game in giving up three interceptions and fumbling the ball once. It was by far the worst game of the season for Manning. However, he was still able to rally the Broncos to victory in the 3rd and 4th quarters after the Broncos fell behind 21-7. Instead of panicking like some quarterbacks tend to do, Manning stayed composed and led the Broncos to score after score until they tied the game 21-21 with a 1 yard pass from Manning to Joel Dreessen at 14:56 of the 4th quarter.
Less than a minute later Manning threw a 35-yard touchdown to Knowshon Moreno to give the Broncos the lead 28-21 at 14:19 of the 4th. Following a fumble of RG3 after a sack by Broncos Von Miller, the Broncos scored again on a 19 yard field goal from Matt Prater to put the Broncos up 31-21 at 11:14 of the 4th. These three scores within three minutes of the fourth and it showed pretty clearly that the Redskins have completely fallen apart. Manning then thew a 35-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas to make it 38-21 at 6:35 of the 4th quarter. And the final score came on a long 75 yard touchdown from Rodgers-Cromartie following an interception of Kirk Cousins at 2:07 of the 4th quarter to give the Broncos the victory 45-21.
Peyton Manning completed 30 of 44 passes for 354 yards with 4 touchdown passes, 3 interceptions, 1 fumble and 2 sacks. It must have been a nightmare for him to give up all those interceptions but it was pretty clear that he was having problems spotting the Redskins secondary coverage on his receivers.
RG3 completed 15 of 30 passes for 132 yards with 1 touchdown, 2 interceptions and 3 sacks. He also rushed for 7 yards on 5 carries.
Cousins completed 5 of 9 passes for 48 yards with 2 interceptions.
Redskins running back Alfred Morris played well in rushing for 93 yards on 17 carries with 1 touchdown.
Redskins tight end Jordan Reed caught 8 passes for 90 yards.
Broncos receiver Wes Welker caught 6 passes for 81 yards. Knowshon Moreno caught 6 passes for 89 yards.
