By Ed Baylor: The Cincinnati Bengals (6-2) really stomped the New York Jets (4-4) on Sunday in scoring 14 points in the first three quarters to win the game 49-9 at Paul Brown Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio. Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith had a horrible game in throwing two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns by the Bengals in the 2nd half. After his second interception, Geno Smith was pulled from the game by Jets head coach Rex Ryan in the 4th quarter and replaced by Matt Simms.
The Bengals was unstoppable in the game with superb play of their quarterback Andy Dalton, who threw 5 touchdowns. Dalton threw four of his TDs to wide receiver Marvin Jones. Since the Jets couldn’t cover Jones, Dalton kept going back to him again and again. By the end of the game, Jones had caught 8 passes for 122 yards.
Dalton completed 19 of 30 passes for 325 yards with 5 touchdowns, 1 interception and 1 sack.
Jets quarterback Geno Smith completed 20 of 30 passes for 159 yards with 2 interceptions and 3 sacks. His replacement Matt Simms wasn’t much better in completing just 3 of 7 passes for 17 yards with 1 sack.
The Jets came into this game on a high from their bitterly contested 30-27 win over the New England Patriots last Sunday, but the Bengals quickly knocked the air out of their sails early in the 1st quarter by showing them this was going to be a much different game for them than last week. There was not going to be any controversial pushing penalties that would settle this game, as the Bengals scored 14 points in the 1st quarter and then added another 14 points in the 2nd quarter to go up by a 28-6 lead at halftime. The officials could have called pushing penalties on the Bengals until they were blue in the face and it still wouldn’t have helped the Jets win this game. They were simply outclassed in every department.
Dalton had touchdown passes of 9 yards to Marvin Jones and 4 yards to Jermain Gresham in the 1st quarter. The Jets got on the board with a 45 yard field goal from Nick Folk in the 2nd quarter to make it 14-3. However, Dalton then came back with a 6 yard touchdown pass to Marvin Jones to make it 21-3 at 6:13 in the 2nd quarter. Folk then kicked a 47-yard field goal to make it 21-6 at 1:08 of the 2nd. But Dalton once again struck by throwing a 14 yard touchdown to Marvin Jones with just 0:16 left before halftime to make it 28-6.
In the 3rd quarter, Bengals Chris Crocker intercepted a pass from Geno Smith and ran 32 yard for a touchdown to make it 35-6 at 14:45. The Jets then came back with a 50-yard field goal from Nick Folk to make it 35-9 at 4:49. Why the Jets went for a field goal with them down so many points is unclear. It would seem they would have needed a heck of a lot more than just 3 points with them down 35-6 with 4:49 left in the 3rd. Dalton then came back with a 6 yard touchdown pass to Marvin Jones at 1:13 of the 3rd quarter to bring the Bengals up by a 42-9 score. In the 4th quarter, Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones intercepted a pass from Geno Smith and ran it 60 yards for a touchdown at 13:09 of the 4th. Smith tried to tackle Jones on the run but he easily eluded him to score the touchdown.
Bengals receiver A.J. Green caught 3 passes for 115 yards.
The Jets leading receiver was David Nelson with 8 catches for 80 yards.
