By Stu Peterson: Washington Redskins vice president Bruce Allen says the reason why the organization made the decision to pick up the 5th year option on quarterback Robert Griffin III was because they see him as their starting quarterback.
RG3 has had two consecutive poor seasons for the team. If he puts together a third straight poor season in 2015, then it’s very likely the Redskins will let him go after this season rather than let him play for big money in 2016.
“We think Robert is a starting quarterback,” Allen said via Michael Phillips of the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “We’ve seen him win. We’ve seen him win big games. We know his talent. It really was a no-brainer. I think if you asked us six months before it would have been the same decision.”
RG3 will make $16 million in 2016, which is really big money given the level of play that he’s given the team. But then again there are other mediocre quarterbacks in the NFL making similar money. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, Chicago Bears signal caller Jay Cutler and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton are all making similar numbers and none of them are top level quarterbacks. It’s kind of a reflection on the organization that they’re willing to pay for poor quarterback play.
“There’s a cost to everyone who gets hurt,” Allen said. “I don’t see that as an individual player thing, as much as any injury is going to cost you on the salary cap.”
It’s not just the injury risk that is hurting the Redskins. RG3 doesn’t play well even when he’s completely healthy. He doesn’t know how to play out of the pocket, and there are major question marks surrounding him ever being able to play at a high enough level for him to be useful as a starter.
RG3 is literally going to be playing for his future with the team in 2015 because if he doesn’t play at a high level this season, then he’ll surely be cut by the team before the start of the 2016 season in order for them to not have to pay him the $16 million for his 5th year.
The Redskins should have used one of their picks in the 2015 NFL draft to select a quarterback in the draft because they’re going to need a player to take over the team next year if RG3 fails to play at a high level. I’m not sure that Kirk Cousins or Colt McCoy are good enough players to lead the team.
