By Stu Peterson: Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has set a low goal for himself for the 2015 season. RG3, whose short career with the Skins has been plagued with injuries and poor play, is just hoping to stay healthy next season as he starts his fourth season in the NFL. RG3 missed seven games in the 2014 season with an ankle injury. In 2013, he missed games due to a torn ACL in his right knee.
The Redskins have a new quarterback coach in 59-year-old Matt Cavanaugh and this is a new opportunity for RG3 to develop into the player that the Redskins thought he would be when they drafted him in the 1st round in 2012.
The Redskins gave up a lot to get RG3 in terms of draft picks, and thus far he’s been nothing short of a bust for him. Last season, Griffin III finished with a passing rating of 86.9 with a completion percentage of 68.7. However, he threw only four touchdown passes with six interceptions.
Many of the passes he did complete were the short variety, and they didn’t help the Skins move the football down the field. He completed 147 of 214 passes for 1,694 yards, but a lot of the yardage he got was during garbage time with the Redskins far behind in the game and the opposing defenses playing loose.
“Stay healthy, go out and have fun and play the game, and the rest will fall in place,” Griffin said via ESPN.com. “I think with the moves that we’ve made, that the coach and the G.M. have made, it will allow us to be in a better position to win games, and I think all the guys are excited about that. You never want to see guys go, coaches and players, but I know coaches have to do what’s best for the team, and we all hope and pray we end up winning.”
Even if RG3 does stay healthy in 2015 it doesn’t mean that he’s going to be the starting quarterback. Redskins coach Jay Gruden wants to see better quarterback play from RG3. He wants him to be able to stay in the pocket and get his passes off instead of him scrambling around the pocket on pass plays needlessly.
There’s a high chance that the Redskins starting quarterback next season will be Colt McCoy if RG3 doesn’t have a good preseason and training camp. Until being sidelined by a neck injury, McCoy outplayed RG3. Gruden liked what he saw from McCoy.
