By Stu Peterson: The Oregon Ducks (13-1) were far too good for the hapless Florida State Seminoles in the New Years’ day route at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. With quarterback Marcus Mariota shredding the Florida State secondary, the Ducks destroyed Florida State 59-20 on Thursday.
Surprisingly, the game was close at halftime with Oregon leading 18-13. However, in the 3rd quarter, Oregon erupted for 27 points in outscoring Florida 27-7. The route continued into the 4th quarter with Oregon scoring 14 more points to finish the slaughter.
Florida State quarterback James Winston had an off date in fumbling the ball in the 3rd quarter and then watching it be recovered by Tony Washington, who returned it 58 yards for an Oregon touchdown. Winston, who will likely be turning pro in the 2015 NFL draft, completed 29 pf 45 passes for 348 yards with one touchdown and one interception to go along with his fumble.
Mariota had a better game in completing 26 of 36 for 338 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Mariota also rushed for 60 yards on 7 carries with one touchdown. Mariota will also turn pro, but you can expect him to go higher in the draft than Winston, because he’s a more complete player and ready to play immediately depending on the team he goes to. It’s possible that the Cleveland Browns will look to draft him.
Mariota was unstoppable in the 3rd quarter in throwing two touchdown passes and leading Oregon to 27 points.
The Oregon defense really clamped down on the Florida State offense in the 2nd half in limiting them to just one touchdown.
In one of the few bright spots in the game for Florida State, running back Dalvin Cook rushed for 103 yards on 15 carries. Karlos Williams gained 80 yards on 12 carries.
Oregon running back Thomas Tyner rushed for 124 yards on 12 carries for two touchdowns.
Both teams compiled a lot of yards in total offense. Oregon gained 639 to 528 for Florida State.
