By Steve Brooks: Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah caught a 59-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr to defeat McNeese St by a 31-24 score on Saturday at the at the Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska.
The game was much closer than it was expected for the No.19 Nebraska, as they were supposed to roll over McNeese State, as this is a team that is nowhere near the same level that they are. But they got geared up for the game and were able to make some big plays to get them tied at 24-24 in the 4th quarter.
McNeese State got good production from quarterback Daniel Sams on the ground with him rushing for 74 yards on 10 carries with a long of 26 yards. Running back Kelvin Bennett rushed for 53 yards on 19 carries.
Nebraska quarterback Armstrong Jr rushed for 132 yards on 11 carries with a long of 32 yards with 1 touchdown. He also passed for 241 yards on 16 of 31 pass attempts for 2 touchdowns and 2 interception. Armstrong Jr had touchdown passes of 40 yards to Jordan Westerkamp in the 1st quarter to put Nebraska into a 7-7 tie. Previous to this, McNeese State running back Derrick Milton rushed 10 yards for a touchdown to strike first blood in the 1st quarter.
Armstrong Jr rushed for a 1-yard touchdown in the 2nd quarter to put Nebraska up 21-14. In the 4th quarter, Armstrong Jr completed a 59 yard touchdown pass to Ameer Abdullah for the game winner.
Abdullah rushed for 56 yards on 16 carries with 1 touchdown. He also caught 3 passes for 97 yards with 1 touchdown.
Nebraska was ahead 24-14 going into the 4th quarter, but they seemed to ease off on the throttle, as they let McNeese State back into the game with them scoring 10 points in the 4th quarter. Nebraska then had to come back and score a touchdown by Abdulla in the last 2 minutes of the game to give Nebraska the win.
