By Ed Baylor: No. 24 Missouri (1-0) exploded for 21 points in the 1st quarter and then cruised from there to defeat South Dakota State (0-1) by a 38-18 score on Saturday at Faurot Field in Missouri. In the first minute of action, Missouri quarterback Maty Mauk threw a nice 44-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Darius White to put Missouri up 7-0.
It was so quick that S. Dakota St looked shell-shocked by the place.
S. Dakota immediately came back with a long 75-yard touchdown run by running back Zach Zenner to tie the score at 7-7. Zenner finished the game with 103 yards rushing on 17 carries with 2 touchdowns.
Mauk then came back with a 39-yard touchdown throw to Darius White to put Missouri back in the lead at 14-7. A little over a minute later, Missouri struck again this time with running back Russell Hansbrough rushing for a 10-yard touchdown to put Missouri up 21-7.
S. Dakota would score a 39-yard field goal with 6:52 remaining in the 2nd quarter on a kick by Justin Syrovatka to make it 21-10.
In the 2nd half, Missouri outscored S. Dakota 17-8. Missouri scored on a 100-yard touchdown run by Marcus Murphy on a kickoff return following a S. Dakota touchdown at the start of the 3rd quarter. Murphy’s touchdown took the air out of S. Dakota because they had just scored on a 3-yard rushing touchdown by running back Zach Zenner, and they looked pretty excited by the play.
Zenner rushed for 103 yards on 17 carries.
Missouri quarterback Maty Mauk completed 13 of 21 passes for 178 yards with 3 touchdown passes. He didn’t put up big yardage totals in the game, but he didn’t need to because the Missouri ground game was hitting on all cylinders with Russell Hansbrough rushing for 126 yards on 20 carries with 1 touchdown. Marcus Murphy rushed for 54 yards on 9 carries.
S. Dakota St receiver Jake Wieneke caught 6 passes for 107 yards. Jason Schneider caught 5 passes for 67 yards.
Missouri receiver Darius White caught 2 passes for 83 yards with 2 touchdowns.
