By Stu Peterson: After spending much of this week repeating the same sentence to the media over and over, Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch took the gloves off on Thursday in giving the NFL media a good scolding for them continuing to pepper him with questions despite the fact that Lynch has shown that he has no intentions of answering their questions.
On Thursday, Lynch decided he was going to give the media a piece of his mind instead of him answering their questions about the Patriots game.
This is some of what Lynch said to the media:
“Hey, look, I mean, all week I done told y’all what’s up. And for some reason, y’all continue to come back and do the same thing that y’all did,” said Lynch. “I don’t know what kind of story y’all are trying to get out of me. I don’t know what kind of image y’all are trying to portray of me. But it don’t matter what y’all think, what y’all say about me, cause when I go home at night, they same people that I look in the face, my family, that I love, that’s all I really matters to me.”
What’s really tragic about this is that Lynch is biting the hand that feeds by choosing not to speak to the media in order to answer questions that many of his fans want to know about him. The fans are the ones that are buying tickets to see Lynch play the game, and they’ve made him a millionaire. Instead of being thankful to the fans for supporting him and paying his wages in part, Lynch decides to be passive aggressive by choosing not to speak to the media. Lynch comes across like someone whose been wronged in the past.
“I laugh at his attitude. I mean seriously — you make millions to play a game you love,” said Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. ”What is so hard about answering some questions about your role as one of the team’s best players? It is part of his obligation as a professional but besides that the media is there to act as a conduit to the fans. So he is denying his team’s fans and football fans in general his insight as a star player. It’ just silly. And he makes himself look like a moron with his single sentence answer being repeated over and over. But it’s his decision and it is what it is.”
It’s hard to disagree with what Rafael is saying here, because Lynch does come off badly with him repeating answers over and over again to the media. It makes him not look like an adult, and he’s being seen by millions of fans when he acts like this. Instead of him blending into the background and being hidden, Lynch has become the center of attention with his behavior because the media see him as so odd.
