By Darren Jackson: The Kansas City Chiefs are in a real bad position going into their game tomorrow against the Indianapolis Colts. They’re traveling to Indianapolis, Indiana to play the Colts in front of their own fans, but in addition to that the Colts already proved this season that they have the Chiefs’ number in beating them 23-7 two weeks ago in Kansas City.
The Chiefs were totally embarrassed in losing badly in front of their own fans, and there was nothing they could do about it. Colts quarterback Andrew Luck completed 26 of 37 passes for 241 yards with a completion percentage of 70.3. Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith completed 16 of 28 passes for 153 yards with 1 interception and a completion percentage of 57.1.
The Chiefs have a problem where they don’t have the ability to put points up on the board in a hurry if they fall behind in the game. Alex Smith is more of a short 5-yard passer, and when those passes get shut down, he doesn’t have any options other than running the ball himself or handing it off to running back Jamaal Charles.
The Colts are really good at stopping the run, and stuffing the passing lanes to take away the short passes that Smith thrives on. The Colts did the same thing in beating the San Francisco 49ers in front of their own fans at Candlestick Park, and they did it to the Chiefs as well. The games where the Colts had problems was when they were playing against a good quarterback that could throw the ball deep, such as Andy Dalton, Carson Palmer and Philip Rivers.
The Colts secondary can’t stop those kinds of quarterbacks, and Luck isn’t as good as those guys are at moving the ball down field on deep passes. Luck is just a little bit better than Smith with his ability to throw short to medium range passes. Luck can’t throw deep, so if he’s forced to move the ball in a hurry then Colts are out of luck.
The Chiefs have injury problems with wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and linebacker Tamba Hali. Both of those guys are questionable for Saturday, and without them the Chiefs have very little chance of winning.
