By Darren Jackson: This Saturday NFL fans will get a chance to see two of the hottest quarterbacks in the league face each other in New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees going up against Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles in an NFC East wildcard game in Philadelphia.
The strange thing about this match-up is that both quarterbacks previously attended the same high school, Westlake, in Austin, Texas. What are the odds of something like that happening with the same position and with both players being outstanding?
Both Brees and Foles had passing ratings over 100, which is very impressive to say the least. Brees completed 68.6 percent of his throws with a passing rating of 104.7; whereas Foles completed 64 percent of his passes with a higher passing rating of 119.2. The reason why Foles finished with a higher passing rating than Brees is because he had fewer interceptions and a higher percentage of touchdown passes per game than Brees.
This game is going to have a lot of fireworks from start to finish with both quarterbacks throwing quite a bit. The Saints kind of have to throw the football a lot, because they don’t have a great running attack to take up the slack to ease the pressure on Brees. If they don’t have Brees throwing for big yardage then they lose most of their games. But Brees is so good that he’s able to have big games almost every time. Only two teams were able to contain Brees this season, the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks. But as for the rest, Brees tore them apart. He completed 446 of 650 passes this season for 5,162 yards.
Foles hasn’t been as consistent as Brees in terms of having huge games. Foles struggled against the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions this season, both of which were able to put a lot of pressure on him to keep him from having time to find receivers.
Foles has a big advantage in this game because he’s got a great running back in DeSean McCoy that he can rely on if the Saints are putting a lot of pressure on him. He’s also got the home crowd that will help energize him as well.
