In Week 9 Iowa State struck again toppling yet another AP Top-5 unbeaten. Week 10 saw the 1st College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday. Also, 7 different ranked vs. ranked square-off not to mention a variety of important conference games across the country.
#2 Alabama vs. #19 LSU: The Texas A&M game was the last time Alabama was even remotely challenged. The two things that stood out with the Aggies was a strong defensive line and a quality ground game which is exactly what LSU is built on. Bama is too strong across the board while LSU although improved in the last month or so, still has glaring weaknesses on offense.
The Pick: Alabama 27 LSU 16
#13 Virginia Tech at #10 Miami: Don’t let the Hurricanes glossy undefeated record fool you as they get ready to face their toughest test of the season. Virginia Tech’s only loss came against Clemson in a game the Hokies defense played good enough to win. In the last four outings Miami has played down to the opposition, slow starts on offense paired with giving up chunk-plays on defense. All those tight finishes will finally catch up to the Hurricanes as Virginia Tech takes control of the ACC Coastal division.
The Pick: Virginia Tech 24 Tech Miami 19
Under The Radar
#5 Oklahoma at #11 Oklahoma State: With TCU falling to Iowa State last week, the same Cyclone team that gave the Sooners their only loss, this Big-12 rivalry dubbed ‘Bedlam’ now has major implications. In a matchup of high-voltage offenses the unit that finds a way to bend but doesn’t break on defense via turnovers or forcing field goals will be victorious. The rumors of Cowboy QB Mason Rudolph injuries still lingering fuels my fire to pick with the Sooners. When these two programs have met as Top-25’ers Oklahoma has won 15 of the last 16 times which is another reason to side with the Sooners.
The Pick: Oklahoma 37 Oklahoma State 34
Saturday Upset Special
Illinois has played several teams close recently to finally breakthrough as a 14.5-point underdog on Purdue. I do see the Illini fitting nicely in the Against The Spread category as well obviously.
Hardcore Barn Burner
#4 Clemson vs. #20 N.C. State will basically decide the winner of the Pacific division and a trip to the ACC conference title game.
(Honorable Mention: #17 USC vs. #22 Arizona: So many high-profile games on the week 10 schedule it’s easy to not pay attention to this Pac-12 game with plenty at stake.)
Against The Spread
South Carolina will indeed lose to the unbeaten, top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs but by less than the 23.5-points Las Vegas has them as underdog.
(Honorable Mentions: LSU finds a way to lose by less than 21.5 points as a live underdog. Also, Minnesota could loss by single digits instead 15.5-points to Michigan.)
