By Ed Baylor: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says that Amir Khan could be in the spotlight for a big fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. if Khan can take care of business this Saturday night against Luis Collazo on the Mayweather v Marcos Maidana fight card. Schaefer says he’s put Khan in position to earn the fight against Mayweather by matching him against the 33-year-old Collazo, but it’s going to be up to Khan to win in such a dominating manner to show that he deserves the fight with Mayweather.
Schaefer says that Khan doesn’t need to knock Collazo out to show that he’s dominated him; he just needs to beat him in an impressive fashion to earn the fight.
“If Amir can turn in a spectacular performance – and by that I do not mean a knockout, I mean a dominant, clean performance – he will be in the limelight for a Mayweather showtime,” Schaefer said to the Telegraph. “As promoters all we can do is get guys klike Amir into position. It is up to the fighter to prove that they deserve the opportunity…Now Khan needs to make his presence felt.”
Khan will need to fight the perfect fight for him to get past Collazo in an impressive fashion, because this is potentially a tough fight for Khan. He’s not been dominating anyone since his win over Zab Judah in 2011, and it’s a tough ask to expect Khan to breeze through a powerful and experienced southpaw like Collazo. It’s quite possible that Khan will win the fight, but it’s another thing to expect him to be able to breeze through Collazo as if he’s one of the weaker fighters that Khan has faced. Judah was over the hill when Khan fought him, and that made it easy for Khan to easily beat him. Collazo, for his part, still has a lot left in the tank and he could pull off a big upset.
