By Mark Sloan: During last Saturday night’s Showtime ALL ACCESS: Mayweather vs. Maidana episode 2, Marcos Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia predicted that Maidana will hurt Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) in their fight this Saturday night when he goes to his body with big power shots. To emphasis this, Garcia put on a body protector pad and had the hard hitting Maidana hit him with body shots one after another. You could see that the punches were powerful, and still hard enough to hurt Garcia through the thick padding of the protector.
“When I hit Floyd Mayweather Jr., it’ll hurt,” Maidana said. Garcia then responded with “If Chino lands, and Chino hurts Mayweather, it’s over. You’re going to hurt his ribs. Definitely. The fighters that give Floyd trouble are those that are aggressive, that keep coming forward, that don’t respect him. If Chino lands, and Chino hurts Mayweather, then it’s over.”
Mayweather will need to re-think his fight strategy of going into the corner and fighting with his back against the ropes like he always does in his fights. That won’t be such a great plan if he uses it against Maidana, because he’ll be nailing him with body shots that won’t miss. Mayweather’s normal opponents try and hit him with head shots, and that’s a strategy that generally fails to pay off due to the head and torso movement that Mayweather uses to get out of the way of the shots. But as you could see during the latest Mayweather vs. Maidana ALL ACCESS program, Maidana wasn’t throwing a of head shots. His focus was almost entirely on throwing body shots.
“A lot of people want Mayweather to lose. When I hit Mayweather, it’ll hurt,” Maidana said.
It’ll definitely hurt Mayweather if he gets hit in the body by Maidana, and there’s probably not much he can do to avoid it other than to stay in the center of the ring at all times to avoid running out of room, and getting nailed with Maidana’s punishing body shots.
Mayweather likes to throw short punches when he’s cornered, but that may not work as well against Maidana because he has a good chin and he’ll be firing back with harder shots than the ones Mayweather is throwing.
