By Chip Dee: Former 6 division world champion Sugar Ray Leonard thinks that it’s time for Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao to finally get inside the ring and face each other after talking about a fight between them for many years.
Leonard believes that the boxing fans really want to see this fight, and that the two stars should face each other for the fans and for their legacies. Leonard understands that the money will be there for the fight, but it’s got to be more than just money. It’s about their legacies.
“It’s more than just the money,” Leonard said to Fox 11 Los Angeles. “Because the money will be there. It’s the legacy. “They should fight. Now they’re leaning more towards Mayweather. Because at first it was ‘We don’t know who’s going to win the fight’ — like Tommy Hearns and I, like Hagler and I, like Duran and I.”
The problem that gets in the way of a Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight is that Mayweather has said in the past that he doesn’t want to fight Pacquiao while he’s still promoted by his old promoter Bob Arum. Mayweather doesn’t want to do business with Arum for some reason that only he knows about.
Pacquiao could have waited out his contract at the end of 2014 and attempted to fight Mayweather in 2015, but instead Pacquiao re-signed a new contract for 2 years with Arum that will take him beyond the point where Mayweather plans on retiring from the sport.
That was Pacquiao’s move to re-sign with Arum, and it may have cost him the fight. Another reason why we’ll likely never see a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is that Mayweather is making $32 million per fight with his existing contract with Showtime. With the kind of money it doesn’t make a lot of sense for Mayweather to fight Pacquiao. The money is too good for him to fight other guys.
“But that fight would be huge. I think fans are starving for excitement,” Leonard said. “Fans are starving for competition, evenly matched fights. But it would be huge.”
Boxing fans still want to see a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao, but it might not matter if Mayweather doesn’t want to do business with Arum.
