By Benjy Swan: Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) has a big fight this Saturday night against former WBA welterweight champion Luis Collazo (35-5, 18 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. If Khan can get past Collazo, he’ll be looking for an opponent for later on this year. One guy that Khan would love to fight is WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao. Khan is friends with Pacquiao, but he’s willing to put his friendship aside to make that fight happen.
Khan wants a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr, but that fight isn’t doable this year because Khan will be celebrating the Ramadan religious holiday in September, and Mayweather has already scheduled himself to fight on September 14th. Mayweather isn’t going to give up his September 14th date, because that’s the same weekend as the Mexican Independence day holiday, and Mayweather wants to take advantage of that.
“It can happen, definitely it can happen. we are friends, but like I’ve said sometimes friends have to fight each other,” Khan said to The Mirror. “Manny’s a great fighter, but if it makes sense taking that fight, then why not? I want to fight the best people out there so if that means Manny’s one of them and it could happen, then why not? It can definitely happen.”
This is a fight that would be interesting if they can make it happen. Khan vs. Pacquiao would be perfect for October or November, if Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank bless the fight. There’s no way it can happen if the two fighters’ promoters don’t agree to make the fight. Khan needs the fight because he may never get a shot against Mayweather, because Golden Boy will be looking to match Khan against someone like Keith Thurman, Shawn Porter and Adrien Broner for later this year, and there’s no guarantee that Khan can beat any of those fighters. They can all fight, and they’ve got the power to give Khan a ton of problems if they can land something big on his chin.
Without a fight against Pacquiao, Khan may never get a huge money fight in his career because the chances are fairly high that he’s going to get beaten by someone sooner or later while he waits on a Mayweather fight to happen. I wouldn’t be surprised if Khan loses his fight this Saturday against the hard hitting Collazo, because this guy definitely has the game to knock Khan out cold and give him another defeat. Khan is talking about wanting to use an in and out approach to fighting Collazo. That might be a good idea because he can’t afford to get nailed by something big.
