By M. Niemayer: Sparring partner Julius Jackson is very impressed with the punching power of WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golokvin (30-0, 27 KOs). Jackson is helping Golovkin get ready for his title defense next Saturday, October 18th, against Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) in their fight at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Jackson, the son of former world champion Julian Jackson, says he’s never been hit as hard by any fighter before as he has in his sparring sessions with Golovkin.
“The rumors are true, GENNADY GOLOVKIN is an animal. I’ve never been hit as hard from anybody else and I’ve sparred heavyweights,” Jackson said to Bayloric.
Jackson went on to say that he wonders what it would be like to get hit by Golovkin if he were wearing 8 or 10 ounce gloves rather than 16 ounce.
Golovkin will be fighting Rubio this Saturday on World Championship Boxing on HBO. The co-feature bout will see WBA Super world featherweight champion Nonito Donaire facing Nicholas Walters in an exciting fight that could go either way.
Golovkin is taking a step up in facing Rubio, because most of the guys that Golovkin has faced during his career have been B and C level fighters. You have to call Rubio a B level fighter as well, but he’s a solid B level fighter, and he’s got the power to make it tough on Golovkin if he elects to slug it out with him in a war like he’s been doing against his opposition.
Rubio is the one fighter where Golovkin is going to need to be careful if he doesn’t want to get in trouble and get hurt by one of Rubio’s big shots.
What makes Rubio especially tough is that he has a strong chin, and is able to take a lot of punishment from his opponents. With his power, if he’s able to stick around late into his fights, it gives him a chance of winning because he eventually gets to his opponents. That’s really what makes Rubio dangerous for Golovkin. If Rubio can stay around for the full 12 rounds, then he’s going to inflict a lot pain and suffering on Golovkin and we might possibly see an upset in the making.
